I have loved the idea of the sock bun since I first saw it on Pinterest, mostly because I like the look of the bun but am growing my hair out and it is much too short to create the style without some help. I didn’t necessarily want to go out and buy brown socks just to cut one up, and I had tried the style with a white sock but too much of the white had shown through. I was considering buying a mesh hair donut from Sally’s when I came across a pin on Pinterest that linked to a tutorial on how to crochet one. I happen to be an avid crocheter and had some chocolate brown yarn on hand so I gave it a shot, and it turned out great! I ended up modifying the pattern a bit for my preferences and I couldn’t be happier.

Here’s a quick overview of the process:

Materials:

Yarn that matches or is similar to your hair color

A smaller size crochet hook (F, G, or H would work well)

Yarn, craft or embroidery scissors

Yarn needle

-Chain 25 (add or subtract chain stitches based on how thin or thick your ponytail is)

Row 1: Double crochet in the third loop from the hook and in each chain across (23 double crochets).

Row 2: Chain 2 and turn. Double crochet in the back loop of each of the 23 stitches of the previous row.

Row 3-14: Repeat row 2. You can add or subtract rows based on the amount of volume you want your bun shaper to have.

-Roll the crocheted fabric up from the bottom.

-Whipstitch the tube together lengthwise. This will create a seam but it can be hidden in the center of the bun shaper, so don’t worry if it doesn’t look great.

-Bring the two ends of the tube together to create a donut shape, then whipstitch the ends together tightly. You wouldn’t want it to pull apart while it’s on your head! ;)

Voila! You now have a bun shaper that won’t show through your bun and you can insert bobby pins into it to secure it to your head. :)
